Structure and Expression of Various RNAs in the Archaebacteria

Abstract

Several transfer RNA genes of Sulfolobus solfataricus have been cloned and partially sequenced. Some of these clones are being used to determine the transcription initiation and termination sites of these genes and to study various post-transcriptional processing events. The genes for some minor small RNAs, which migrate between 7S and 4S RNAs during polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, have been cloned and are being characterized. In addition, facilities have been established to grow anaerobic thermophiles, e.g., Thermococcus celer, which is a strict anaerobe and grows optimally at 88 C and a pH of 5.5 to 5.8. Keywords: Archaebacteria.
