Movement and Harvest of Fish in Lake Saint Clair, Saint Clair River, and Detroit River
Abstract
A two-year environmental field study of fishery resources in Lake St. Clair and in the St. Clair and Detroit Rivers was conducted by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for the Corps of Engineers. This report gives a summary of all trap net catches, tagging from trap nets, and creel survey data collected from eight sampling sites in the lake-river system. The eight sites were sampled for different habitat types and fish assemblages. In addition to the above, another ongoing trap net study was continued on Lake Erie and incorporated into this report, since significant northward migration of certain fish species from the lake contributes heavily to the fish populations and fisheries in Lake St. Clair and connecting rivers. The adult fish community and its yield were examined to allow subjective prediction of environmental impacts of extended winter navigation in the St. Clair-Detroit River System.
