Acquisition, Understanding, and Application of Biomedical Science Knowledge

Abstract

This is a final report on an equipment grant, to establish an artificial intelligence laboratory at Southern illinois University School of Medicine. The nature of the established laboratory is described. Systems developed during the term of the grant to support research are described, including a hypertext system for studying instruction of complex, ill-structured subject matter; simulations for studying the application of complex conceptual knowledge; and a microworld for cardiovascular biomedicine. The latter supports further research on the development of misconceptions in complex domains, the stability of these misconceptions, and mechanisms by which faulty beliefs can be changed. Keywords: Computer systems; Artificial intelligence; Medical computer applications; ICAI; Hypertext; Conceptual understanding; Misconceptions.
