Abstract

This study is an assessment of the Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 (Public Law 99-433). It describes what changes the law makes to the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; the strengths and weaknesses of these changes; and what effect it will have on the quality and timeliness of the information provided by the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to senior civilian leadership.
