Computer-Based Modeling Environments

Abstract

This paper gives the author's views on the kind of computer-based modeling environment needed to properly support management science/operations research work, and on the design challenges that need to be met in order to bring such modeling environments into being. It is a written version of the main ideas of two addresses: a plenary at IFORS 87 in Buenos Aires (August, 1987), and the keynote at the 1988 Canadian Operations Research Society Meeting in Montreal (May, 1988). Modeling environments have the potential to greatly increase the productivity of model-based work through better tools, to improve the quality of model-based work through better support for good modeling style and work practices, and to improve the frequency of use of MS/Or by bringing about a more comfortable working relationship between MS/OR professionals and their constituencies.
