Methodology Investigation of AI(Artificial Intelligence) Test Officer Support Tool. Volume 1
Abstract
This report covers the application of artificial intelligence techniques to the problem of creating automated tools to assist officers; it also examines use of an emerging AI field, neural computing, as it might be applied to this problem domain. The objective of this investigation was to provide the test officer with automated support tools by inserting AI technology in appropriate applications. Objectives for the development of these tools included: Orientation toward the test officers as primary user; Wide usability to satisfy the needs of the approximately 100 test officers at the USAEPG; Ready availability (microcomputer based); Reduction in time to perform a given task and/or improved quality of the result; and Education of the user (test officer) in addition to merely providing a solution. An ancillary goal was to maintain awareness of developments in the AI arena which may prove useful in future investigation phases. One area of AI examined in some detail was the field of neural computing. Finally, as testers, a goal of every investigation is to identify any test method requirements which surface. Thus, another objective was to assess the adequacy of current test methods for the test and assessment of systems containing AI. Lessons learned from earlier work on expert system development were applied to restructure the proposed approach. A new approach called for the development of a number of small tools, with a greater overall probability of success than that of a single large tool. Development of smaller tools hosted on microcomputers provided a more flexible means of adjusting to various constraints while also benefiting from the experience gained during previous efforts.
