Treatment of Malaria

Abstract

Almost all patients with malaria can be successfully treated by non- physician health care workers trained to select and administer antimalarials and antipyretics. These health care workers can also recognize patients who are at risk of developing, or who have developed, complicated malaria, but the treatment of patients with severe malaria requires all the skills and resources available to the modern physician. All malaria infections can be cured with available antimalarials if the patient receives a complete course of appropriate therapy. The principles of malaria therapy are: Recognize malaria infections as rapidly as possible; initiate effective antimalarial therapy to reduce and eliminate parasitaemia as rapidly as possible; anticipate and prevent complications; treat complications and prevent death; prevent recrudescence and relapse; recognize and treat recrudescence and relapse and prevent recurrence; and reduce transmission.
