Electronic and Ionic Transport in Polymers

Abstract

Melt spun fibers of poly(3-decylthiophene) show conductivities of 5 S/cm when doped with FeC13 and doping has been shown to be uniform across the cross section by EDAX studies. Large polypyrrole/poly(styrene sulfonate) films have been prepared with conductivities of 40 S/cm. The polyelectrolyte increases mechanical integrity and smoothes the morphology compared to poly(pyrrole tosylate). cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy has been shown to be useful as a fingerprint tool for the ion composition of polypyrrole membranes. Anion exchange to polypyrrole membranes has been found to be sensitive to the nature of the cation when electrochemically switched. A recently discovered bimechanistic phase transfer catalyzed polythioetherification is being studied. New salen monomers containing terminal alkyl units and unsaturation have been prepared and their polymerization is being studied.
