The BETTER Model for Cheatham Lake

Abstract

Better, a two-dimensional mathematical water quality model, was used to simulate water quality conditions in the main body of Cheatham Lake. Sources and preparation of input data, including reservoir and outlet geometry, meteorological conditions, model coefficients and inflow quality and quantity, are described. The report also outlines revisions to the model for the Cheatham application and calibration and verification procedures. Three years, 1985-1987, were simulated under observed conditions, and model predictions were compared to observed data. Additional simulations were performed to estimate impacts on water quality resulting from 1) increasing the effluent from sewage treatment plants, 2) high dissolved manganese concentrations in the release from J. Percy Priest Dam, and 3) a local storm event. Knowledge gained from simulations with the model is summarized and recommendations for future applications are made.
