Freely Drifting Swallow Float Array: August 1988 Trip Report

Abstract

This report presents representative data from the 30-31 August 1988 deployment of the Marine Physical Lab.'s (MPL) set of 12 Swallow floats. The deployment location was about 20 km to the west of Patton Escarpment, near DSDP hole 469, at 32.5 deg N, 120.5 deg W. The midwater floats were ballasted to depths starting at 350 m and spaced every 150 m, to 1400 m. Thirteen ship-launched and two air-launched sonobuoys of various design from the NADC and four Prototype Array Element Localization buoys from the NOSC were concurrently deployed at depths between 120 and 150 m. This report presents the instrument deployment locations, the positions and characteristics of known signal sources, expendable bathythermograph and anemometer data, and representative Swallow float data. The Swallow float data include battery voltage, compass heading, and automatic gain control measurements, the 8kHz acoustic localization ping arrivals, and the VLF pressure and particle velocity data. All 12 Swallow floats operated nearly flawlessly, resulting in a 99.7 % full data set. Keywords: Background noise sources; Radiated noise contamination; Underwater acoustics; Deep sound channels; Underwater acoustics data; Oceanographic data; North Pacific Ocean; Ship noise; Beamforming pingers; Rocking radio beacon antennae; Floating acoustic arrays.
