Evaluation of the Hand-Held Mathematics Tutor

Abstract

This report describes the evaluation of the Hand-Held, Computerized Mathematics Tutor that was developed to teach job-related mathematics to Combat Engineers. Twenty-seven Combat Engineers stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, participated in the research. Pre- and post-tests of their mathematics skills were administered, as well as a questionnaire to determine their attitudes toward the tutor. Analysis revealed that the tutor improved soldier's mathematics skills, with the magnitude of the improvements corresponding to the number of hours spent using the tutor. Participants like the tutor, found it easy to use, and preferred it to mathematics instruction by textbook. Keywords: Teaching machines, Computer aided instruction.
