Nanostructure and Defect Chemistry of Relaxor Ferroelectrics

Abstract

This report describes an investigation of the microstructure, microchemistry, and dielectric properties of relaxor ferroelectrics and structurally related compounds. The emphasis has been on the use of transmission electron microscopy to correlate changes in the composition and processing conditions with changes in microstructure and properties. The report is in three parts that dealt with 1 cation-ordering and microchemical domains in Pb(Sc1/ 2Ta1/2)3 (PST), undoped and La/Na-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)3 (PMN) and Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3) 3 (BZN), 2) micro-polar domains in normal ferroelectrics (BaTi03) and relaxor ferroelectrics (PMN:PT and PZN=:PT), and 3) the effect of a pyrochlore second phase on the dielectric properties of PMN. Keywords: Lead oxides, Magnesium, Niobium Tantalum, Scandium, Barium titanates, Zinc.
