Ground-Based Radar (GBR): Environmental Assessment.

Abstract

The President's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), announced on March 23, 1983, initiated an extensive research program to determine the feasibility of developing an effective ballistic missile defense system. The technological progress that has been made on the SDI research program since 1983 has advanced at an unexpectedly fast pace and is still accelerating. Recognizing that no strategic defense system could be deployed all at once, the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization is using an evolutionary approach to strategic concept addresses the question of how to deploy or deploy. In September 1987, some technologies were advanced from the Concept Exploration phase of the material acquisition process to the Concept Demonstration and Validation phase under this approach, because they were judged to be mature enough in concept definition to warrant further evaluation.
