N NMR Powder Spectra of Semicrystalline Nylon 6

Abstract

The solid state 15N NMR chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) spectra of nylon 6 is reported. Nylon 6 (20% 15N enriched) was prepared by anionic polymerization of isotopically enriched caprolactam. The samples observed were prepared by extraction with methanol to remove unreacted caprolactam, then either annealed to promote crystallization or artificially plasticized by immersion in molten caprolactam. The anisotropic linewidth was approximately 200 ppm, intermediate between the range reported for sp2 and sp3 hybridized nitrogens and consistent with the partial double-bond character of the carbon- nitrogen bond in amides.
