2,2,4,4,5,5-Hexakis(2,6-Diethylphenyl) pentastanna (1.1.1)Propellane: Characterization and Molecular Structure

Abstract

Thermolysis of hexakis(2,6-diethylphenyl)cyclotristannane in xylenes at 200 C provides blue violet, crystalline 2,2,4,4,5,5-hexakis(2,6- diethylphenyl)pentastanna(1.1.1)propellane, 1, in 13% yield and hexakis(2,6- diethylphenyl)distannane, 2, after purification by column chromatography. Analytically pure 1 has been fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, including 119 Sn NMR, and a 2:1 mixed crystal of 1 and 2 has been crystallographically analyzed. Compound 2 has a Sn-Sn bond length of 3.05 A which is the longest tin tin bond length ever observed for a polystannane (previous longest value is 2.97 A).
