Anomalous Stresses versus Extent of Cure in an Epoxy Composite Specimen

Abstract

Recent studies on the properties of high Tg epoxy systems (i.e., di functional aromatic epoxy resins cured with tetrafunctional aromatic diamines) have shown that, with increasing conversion, the room temperature density increases prior to gelation but decreases after gelation. The lower room temperature modulus and higher equilibrium moisture absorption at higher conversions have been attributed to the lower density. The anomalous behavior has been explained using the concept of free volume and the non-linear increase of Tg with conversion.
