Hypersonic Technology for Military Application

Abstract

With the current interest in and potential for hypersonic flight, th ere is a need to determine the Air Force and for the nation the R&D approaches required to realize the opportunities offered by flight in this regime. The committee: (1) determined possible military uses of hypersonic flight, (2) drew on the developing hypersonic technology base, including the evolving results of NASP Phase II, to assess the technical feasibility of meeting the potential applications, (3) identified the technological needs for hypersonic flight, (4) assessed the R&D support requirements including availability of expertise, data bases, and test facilities, (5) provided technical advice to the command level on the R&D strategy of the NASP. Hypersonic aircraft, National aerospace plane.
