Screening of Immunoenhancing Drugs with Antiviral Activity against Members of the Arena-, Alpha-, and Adenoviridae

Abstract

This project was designed to test a series of immunomodulatory compounds designated by the U.S. Army Research and Development Command for their ability to protect animals from an otherwise lethal infection of virus and to determine the mode of action of useful compounds. During this third year of the contract emphasis was placed on two areas. These were the development of virally infected targets for use in invitro assays, determine if these targets were handled in the same manner as other targets traditionally used for invitro testing of macrophages and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses, and measurement of the effect of the compounds on the CTL response. Keywords: Antiviral agents; Endotoxins; Cell cultures; Cytotoxicity Cytolysis; Phagocytes; Interferon; Oxygen metabolites; T Lymphocytes; Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus; Vesicular stomatitis virus.
