Classification of Complex Nonspeech Sounds. Panel on Classification of Complex Nonspeech Sounds

Abstract

The report reviews and evaluates all of the small amount of literature on the classification of complex nonspeech, nonmusic, transient sounds. Some of the literature on perception, signal processing, auditory object perception, limits of auditory processing, acoustic transients, sonar, and multidimensional analysis is also included to provide a meaningful matrix within which to imbed the subject report. Where possible the missing data, and research needs, are outlined in a general, unstructured fashion in order to encourage innovation in this important but infantile area. Are psyco-acousticians finally going to leave the familiar security of pure tones, music, and speech in order to conduct research concerning the real world of meaningful, complex sounds?
