Hypermedia Laboratory, Defense Applied Information Technology Center; Review for 1988

Abstract

The Hypermedia Laboratory began with the incorporation of artificial intelligence into the DTIC Common Command Language System Design project for the DoD Gateway Information System. With the availability of bitmap systems, rapid prototype developments were done making use of these systems' capabilities of icon-drive, multi-windowing and multi-tasking. It was a short step to our expanding exploration of technologies involving integration of artificial intelligence, bitmap systems, networking, and electronic media as means of transmitting and storing information. In hypermedia, artificial intelligence will serve as the interface engine between the user and the information source; the bitmap system will be the platform for viewing information in a manner organized by the viewer; networking gets the user to the diverse and multiple sources of information; media concerns the diverse forms of storing information, including online, optical disc, floppy disc, voice, electronic mail, et al., and stimuli information such as sound, images, and color. Integration of these technologies will give the user the ability to collect and handle information, from any source, in a contextual manner. Context handling is the reason for implementing hypermedia systems. Integration of technologies for context handling is the primary goal of the Hypermedia Laboratory.
