How a Standardized Change Management Methodology Can Improve Software Maintenance

Abstract

Software maintenance is a major activity at the Navy Management Systems Support Office (NAVMASSO). The purpose of this report is to assist the Navy Management Systems Support Office in performing software maintenance by showing a detailed example of applying the software change management methodology which was described in the previous report: 'Software Maintenance: The Need for Standardization', Norman F. Schneidewind, February 1989, Naval Postgraduate School Technical Report NPS-54-89-02. The maintenance of local area network software is used as the example. The methodology is general and can be applied to any programming environment and language, including COBOL.
