Diagnosis Related Groups as Indicators of Nurse Staffing Requirements

Abstract

This study was accomplished to determine if Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) are indicators of nurse staffing requirements. A sample of discharge record abstracts was classified into DRGs and the amount of nursing time spent with those individual patients was determined using the Workload Management System (WMS). The correlation between the DRG relative weight used by Medicare to predict relative resource consumption and WMS patient acuity points was extremely low, indicating the DRG weights do not predict nursing time spent with the patient. Although it was concluded that the variability of the acuity points was too great to be of practical use for daily intra-hospital allocation decisions, the mean points per DRG could be useful on a macro scale.
