Role of the Senior Leader in Preparation for Airland Battle
Abstract
The current and future AirLand Battle environment poses significant changes to our methods of conducting battle. In order to be successful in this environment we must adhere to the tenets and imperatives for conduct of AirLand Battle as outlined in Field Manual 100-5. Our leadership doctrine and development programs must also make concomitant changes in order to keep pace with the changed battlefield environment. Senior Army leaders must play a key in the leadership process. This study answers the question: 'Given the current and future AirLand Battle environment, what must the senior leader do within his command to insure that successful wartime leadership traits are trained and learned by his subordinate leaders?' This study begins with an examination of the doctrinal requirements for AirLand Battle and a vision of the AirLand Battle environment. The leadership implications within the environment are then addressed and an assessment made of what we must add, delete, or change within our leadership methods and programs in order to be successful. The Senior leader's role in implementing those changes is then discussed and recommendations are made in answering the question stated above.
