Bit Rate Recovery Using Digital Ladder Networks

Abstract

An algorithm that estimates the bit rate of PSK and FSK signals has been developed and its performance simulated. The basis of the algorithms stems from a Digital Ladder Network to detect bit changes in intercepted signals. Random bit changes are reflected in large values of the ladder's so-called 'likelihood parameter'. The characteristics and trends of this parameter are observed and documented. The bit rate is obtained from an estimate of the likelihood parameter's power spectrum. Simulation results show that the algorithm produces a distinct spectral line at the bit rate for signal-to-noise ratios as low as -1 dB. Canada.
