TWIRE: A Test Program for VLF Airborne Transmissions

Abstract

A computer program called TWIRE, which combines a TACAMO configuration code, a radiation resistance code and a VLF propagation code, has been assembled for the purpose of conducting case studies for airborne VLF transmissions and for the purpose of pointing out possible future areas of improvement for such transmissions. A major deficiency of the program is that it is not fully automated because the configuration code requires initial inputs which often have to be determined by trial and error. Nevertheless, the program is useful for case studies and provides a tool for assessing the adequacy for field calculation purposes of point dipoles as approximations to rationally determined TACAMO antenna configurations. Sample results of such comparisons are included.
