Organic Explosives and Related Compounds. Environmental and Health Considerations

Abstract

This report is a compendium of a large body of information currently available in the open literature and in government publications on organic compounds used as explosives and in propellant formulations. While a summary of synthetic processes is included, the emphasis is focused on behavior and fate of these compounds in the environment and their biological effects and potential for animal and human health concerns. Physicochemical properties likely to be of value in making environmental calculations and decisions are also listed and discussed. Keywords: TNT; DNT; RDX; HMX; Tetryl nitroguanidine; PETN; Nitroglycerin; Ammonia picrate/picric acid; Ethylene glycol dinitrate; Propylene glycol dinitrate; Diethylene glycol dinitrate.
