Exploratory Study of Niobium, Titanium, Zirconium and Tantalum Aluminides

Abstract

The microstructure, crystal structures of existing phases, hardness and slip systems for several binary and ternary aluminides have been determined. Arc melted samples purchased from an external supplier invariably cracked upon cooling in the arc melting unit, thereby hampering the ability to prepare mechanical test specimens. Homogenization heat treatments in vacuum usually led to significant porosity, apparently due to loss of aluminum. The properties of arc melted material are compared to those derived from similar compositions prepared by powder metallurgical techniques.
