An Object-Oriented Environment for Representing Building Design and Construction data

Abstract

This report describes an architecture for a building modelling environment that represents the functional and spatial decompositions of a constructed facility. The architecture, based on object-oriented methods, consists of collections of functional and spatial objects describing the various levels of functional and spatial decomposition of a building; the interrelationships between these objects are represented via several types of constraints - functional, spatial and form-function constraints. The benefits of this model. as opposed to more traditional CAD building models, is that information other than geometric and material properties is represented; this model is capable of identifying the physical objects (geometry, location and material), how they fit into functional systems within the building, how their functional attributes are influenced by form and other functional systems, and of which abstract spaces (rooms, floors, etc) they are a part. Although small portions of this architecture have been implemented to test the concepts described in this report, implementation of this modeling environment has yet to be completed.
