A History of West European Rocketry and Space Research

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to document and analyze steps taken by West Europeans in the rocketry and space field that have played a significant role in world politics and in the development of West Europe as a more integrated power. Through this chronological study, covering a period from the years immediately before the rise of the Nazis to power in Germany until the mid-1980's, the author portrays the three most salient European nations, namely Great Britain, France, and West Germany, in their political roles with one another and, to a lesser extent, with the two superpowers. It is also my intention for this study to act as a reminder that growth, economic well-being, and national security are the rewards of a continued, uninterrupted, generously- funded program of research and development that is organized for efficiency, that is well led, and that is staffed by well educated personnel. Keywords: V2 Rockets; USSR; ELDO(European Launcher Development Corporation); ESA(European Space Agency); Ariane; EUREKA(European Research Coordination Agency); Strategic Defense Initiative.
