Synthetic Helizyme Enzymes

Abstract

The goal of this project is to design and synthesize totally new, man-made enzymes. A peptide structure having catalytic activity resembling that of chymotrypsin was designed by computer graphics modelling and synthesized by solid phase peptide synthesis methods. This synthetic peptide, having 72 amino acid residues, has activity to catalyze the hydrolysis of small molecule substrates for chymotrypsin.
