The Development and Implementation of Career Information and Guidance Systems to Enhance Recruitment and Retention of ROTC Cadets for Army Careers

Abstract

The career Information Survey (CIS) was developed and administered with two existing instruments, the Career Development Inventory (CDI) and the Values Scales (VS), to a group of 64 college-bound high school males. Students with positive, neutral, and negative attitudes about the Army ROTC program were compared on the CDI and VS scales and on four variables measured by the CIS: knowledge and importance of knowledge about the Army ROTC program; credibility of sources of information and advice about the Army ROTC program; desirability of occupations within military and non-military settings; and preferences for alternative military career paths. The results indicated that knowledge about Army ROTC and most specifically knowledge about career prospects is strongly related to having a positive attitude about the Army ROTC program. Accurate information can best be received from military personnel and good advice can best be received from educational personnel. Although the Army military setting overall is less appealing than the government and private sectors, it is equally appealing for those with positive attitudes about the Army ROTC program who plan careers in the sciences, various active and reserve duty career paths appeal to different types of individuals. Individuals with a more positive attitude about the Army program are more planful about their careers than those with neutral and negative attitudes.
