Rescue of Injured Myocytes

Abstract

The critical events leading in to the transition from reversible to irreversible hypoxic and toxic injury to cells remain poorly understood. In recent studies, we have measured changes in cytosolic free Ca2+ mitochondrial membrane potential, cytosolic pH, cell surface blebbing and other factors in relation to the onset of cell death following anoxic and toxic injury to single hepatocytes and myocytes. The major technical approach we have taken for this work utilized Multiparameter Digitized Video Microscopy (MDVM). Keywords: Cell death; Anoxia; Cellular functions; Pathology; Myocytes; Hypercontracture; pH.
