Electron-Beam Phase-Only Spatial Light Modulator for Matched Filtering

Abstract

A vacuum demountable electron-beam addressed LiNbO3 crystal spatial light modulator was designed, fabricated, and tested. The device works in a phase-only mode, capable of being placed in the filter plane of a coherent optical correlator. The measured performance parameters were: spatial resolution-2 lines/mm; contrast ratio - 20:1; phase dynamic range 5 pi, and storage time - 5 minutes. A theoretical resolution of 10 lines/mm would be possible with an improved electron gun assembly. (jhd)
