Cultural Resource Investigations within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection Project

Abstract

This report provides a synopsis and summary of the cultural resource investigations and recommendations are given for completing the cultural resource compliance-related activity within the Project Area in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. Topics include 1) environmental characteristics of the Project Area, including geology, geomorphology, climate, flora, fauna, the region's prehistory and history. Since 1973, 31 cultural resource surveys have been completed in the Project Area. These surveys have recorded 80 archeological sites. Forty of these sites will be directly or indirectly affected by land altering activities associated with the New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection Project. Of the 40, three sites are currently listed as National Historic Landmarks. An additional four of the 40 sites affected by the project are eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Archeology. (edc)
