Toward an Understanding of Goal Commitment: A Proposed Model

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the factors influencing goal commitment by reviewing the literature on goal setting. The study had four basic objectives: (1) Determine the factor influencing goal commitment. (2) Construct a goal commitment model based on previous research. (3) Measure the validity of the determinants via a survey instrument. (4) Propose practical applications for commanders, managers and supervisors to obtain goal commitment. The study found that five determinants significantly determine goal commitment. They are: external rewards, self efficacy, trust, expectancy and competition. The study found that competition had a negative impact on goal commitment.
