Dietary Plans for Carbohydrate Loading

Abstract

This report provides dietary plans suitable for carbohydrate loading (i.e., increasing carbohydrate intake in order to increase body glycogen stores) . Two separate 7 day diet plans are presented, with the daily intake of 600 gm carbohydrate for each menu. One diet plan, NMRI-20, provides the necessary carbohydrate with 20% of the calories derived from fat (total calories approx. 3600 kcal/day). The second diet plan NMRI-30, provides the same amount of carbohydrate with 30% of the calories derived from fat (total calories approx 4000 kcal/day). Each menu is nutritionally complete, and provides adequate amounts of protein and fiber. Tables are presented for each daily menu, with separate tables that permit substitution of food items. All items are readily available foods. Palatability testing was conducted during our 1989 saturation dives to 150 fsw and the menus were found to be quite acceptable. The menus did not produce any untoward gastrointestinal complaints of symptoms. (SDW)
