Technology Assessment of Operating Systems

Abstract

With the introduction of the Intel 80386 microprocessor (a 3 2 bit processor as compared to the 8 and 16 bit processors of the past), the scope and capabilities associated with microcomputers has changed dramatically. The 80386 allows for multitasking and a virtual mode making it possible for a micro to function as though it were several micros of the previous generation. However, in order to fully realize the potential of this hardware, the software which runs on it must be specifically designed to take advantage of the services provided. The four major operating systems for microcomputers on the market today are MS-DOS, Macintosh, OS/2, and UNIX. (SDW)
