DR to GPS (Global Positioning System) Aerospace Flight Officer (AFO)

Abstract

An evolutionary retrospection reveals the United States Air Force Navigator (known by over 20 duty titles) does not enjoy a homogeneous tradition as a navigator. Further, it reveals training programs which prepared and presently prepare dissimilar aircrew specialists who are not universally assignable navigators. Present duty requirements in 15 weapon systems and all 8 navigation Air Force specialty career fields were analyzed. The results indicated navigator as an umbrella duty title and aeronautical rating is inaccurate, misleading, exclusive, inflexible, outdated. A new umbrella duty title and aeronautical rating is needed for the present and the future. One is recommended which would provide the USAF and the aircrew specialist more flexibility, more accuracy and more room to accommodate future specialization... Aerospace Flight Office.
