Summary Report of the Defense Science Study Group, 1985-1988

Abstract

The Defense Science Study Group is a DARPA sponsored program that identifies some of the most talented young scientists and engineers in the country today and exposes them to the outstanding issues of national defense. The program seeks to strengthen ties with the part of the scientific and engineering community that is outside of the defense establishment. Its goals are to provide an education to this select group of individuals on the broad scope of critical defense-related scientific and technical problems, encourage long-term, personal involvement in their solution, and provide DoD with a new source of technical advisors and informed critics. The program resides at IDA and is guided by the advice of mentors who have had distinguished careers in defense or academia. Individuals spend about twenty days a year for three years listening to presentations given by distinguished speakers, visiting defense facilities and conducting defense studies on topics of interest. The report summarizes the program's first three years of activities from 1985-1988.
