A Retention Model for Navy Physicians

Abstract

In recent years, the Navy has indicated concern about the retention patterns observed for physicians. Some specialties show relatively low retention compared to others, and the aggregate retention rate for specialists has declined. This research memorandum discusses the derivation of a model to estimate the influence of various factors on unobligated physicians' decisions to stay in or to leave the Navy. The main analytical issues is the quantification of the role of the positive and growing civilian-military pay differential on the retention of Navy physicians.
