Air Campaign Central Europe: Comparative Analysis between World War II and the Present

Abstract

The objective of this Defense Analytical Study is to glean the tactical and strategic lessons from World War II that are applicable to NATO today. Organizational and operational similarities in Europe between World War II and the present provide a legacy that impacts the execution of today's NATO air campaign. Both periods focus on the same components of air campaign strategy: gain and maintain air superiority; provide direct support to ground operations; accomplish the air interdiction campaign. Major lessons learned came from each of these areas during World War II. Some reinforce today's campaign philosophy, while others offer food for thought on issues that may hinder our ability to conduct tactical air operations in Central Europe. (emk)
