Predictions of Transom Stern Hull Resistance by Two Potential Flow Panel Methods

Abstract

Two computer program, XYZFS and SWIFT, for the prediction of ship wave resistance panel method based on potential flow theory have been under development at DTRC in recent years. In addition to the wave resistance, the total hull resistance is obtained in these two programs with semi-empirical formulations for other resistance components (i.e., form drag and frictional resistance). The present investigation evaluates these two computer programs for their ability to predict total resistance of transom stern hulls. The results of the predictions are compared with U.S. Naval academy model test data for fibe stern variants for the FFG7 class design.
