Comparative Investigation on the Speech Transmission Characteristics of Various Types of Headsets for the M-Fregat (Vergelijkend Onderzoek Ten Aanzien Van de spraakoverdracht van diverse typen headsets T.B.V. het M-Fregat)

Abstract

Various types of headsets were investigated in view of their applicability at the M-fregats of the Royal Dutch Navy. The frequency characteristics of microphones and telephones were determined, along with the Speech Transmission Index (STI) in various levels of ambient noise. Also the sound attenuation of the headsets was determined. The data show that the SOLEC headset (types 5 and 11) provides the best over-all results. When considering only sound attenuation characteristics (hearing protection) the Peltor P7 (type 8) is to be preferred. Of the two waterproof headset, only the Silec (type 10) can be recommended.
