Abstract

Behaviors of Military Personnel to Attain or Maintain Desired Weight Prior to Mandatory Weight Surveillance. The purpose of this study was to identify preparatory behaviors of military personnel to attain or maintain desired weight prior to mandatory weight surveillance. An investigator designed questionnaire comprised of a demographic section and a list of 21 potential weight reduction behaviors was distributed to active duty military personnel (n = 1,165) at a midwestern Air Force Base. Twenty of the 21 behaviors were practiced by the respondents prior to weight surveillance. There was a significant difference between behaviors used by individuals meeting weight standards compared with individuals not meeting standards. There was no significant difference in behaviors used according to gender. Keywords: Military requirements.
