Advanced Facilities to Expedite Design and Evaluation of Communications Systems. Phase 1
Abstract
The general problem area addressed was the modeling of communications networks of interest to the United States Army. The specific problems were: 1) to assess the feasibility of using a prototype modeling tool, ES/PAWS, to satisfy the requirements of the U.S. Army for rapid and effective modeling of such networks; and 2) to determine any enhancements to this tool necessary for such modeling. ES/PAWS is a tool for top-down design and analysis of electronics systems. It is based upon the Performance Analyst's Workbench System (PAWS) and Graphical Programming of Simulation Models (GPSM). PAWS is a successful, commercially available simulation language which provides a high-level declarative specification language that reduces modeling errors and speeds model development compared to traditional procedural simulation languages. GPSM is the graphical front end to PAWS. PAWS and GPSM offer high-level visual and declarative facilities for constructing simulation models. We have established that the ES/PAWS tool currently under development will provide many powerful features useful for communications modeling. The strategy of adapting ongoing development work and specializing it for communications system modeling has been established as an efficient and cost-effective approach to develop C/PAWS.
