Synthesis and Radical Polymerization of the Acrylate and Methacrylate Esters of 1-methyl-2,2,3,3-Tetracyanocyclopropylcarbinol

Abstract

The acrylate and methacrylate esters of 1-methyl-2,2,3,3- tetracyanocyclopropylcarbinol 2a and 2b were prepared by the reactions of two equivalents of bromomalononitrile with acetonyl acrylate 1a or acetonyl methacrylate 1b, respectively. Compounds 2a and 2b polymerized with free radical initiators to obtain the polymers with multicyano functionalities in the cyclopropane ring. The resulting polymers were soluble in acetone and tetrahydrofuran and the inherent viscosities in the range of 0.25-0,35 dL/g were obtained. Solution-cast films were clear and brittle, showing T(g) values in the range of 72-80 C. (AW)
