Dredging Operations Technical Support Program. User's Guide for Models of Dredged Material Disposal in Open Water

Abstract

Mathematical models that account for the physical processes determining the short-term fate of dredged material disposed at open-water sites provide estimates of suspended sediment concentrations in the receiving water and the initial deposition pattern and thickness of material on the bottom. Two such models were developed under the US Army Corps of Engineers Dredged Material Research Program to handle both instantaneous dumps and continuous discharges. A third model using features of the two earlier models has been constructed to handle a semicontinuous disposal operation from a hopper dredge. These models are known as DIFID (Disposal From an Instantaneous Dump), DIFCD (Disposal From a Continuous Discharge), and DIFHD (Disposal From a Hopper Dredge). The use and limitations of each are presented along with theoretical discussions. Example applications are given in the appendices to illustrate the setup of input data and the display of output from the models. (aw)
