Qualitative Fastener Standards: Procurement Issues

Abstract

Counterfeit and substandard fasteners have severely impacted the Department of Defense and the nation. This thesis examines the issues involved. The primary issues examined are: the background of the fastener problem, the development and use of standards and specifications, the specific standards used for fastener procurements and how they were applied. The F/A-18 fastener selection process is reviewed. Occurrences at the Defense Industrial Supply Center relating to fasteners are presented. Potential preventive actions are discussed.
