The U.S. Marine Corps' Role in the War on Drugs

Abstract

The Department of Defense has been cast in a lead role in the nation's 'war on drugs.' Based upon the perpetual growth of the illegal drug industry and its overwhelming deleterious effect on U.S. culture and society, the President of the United States has made the drug war a high national priority, sighting the illegal drug menace as a potential threat to our national security and vital world interests. Also, recognizing the sheer magnitude of the drug problem and the overwhelming impact on the nation's law enforcement agencies, the U.S. Congress has enacted new legislation authorizing the U.S. Armed Forces to take a more aggressive role in the war on drugs. This study reviews the national drug strategy; the scope of the drug problem; the connection between drug traffickers, terrorists, and insurgent groups; the Department of Defense's involvement, to include its statutory boundaries, its support of law enforcement agencies, and its counter-narcotics operations overseas; and the unique role the United States Marine Corps can play in the fight against illegal drugs.
