Tensile Tests for Various Specimen Configurations for Metal Matrix Composite P55 GR/AL 6061-T6

Abstract

Metallographic analysis of P55 graphite aluminum metal matrix composites: The fiber content was thus determined to be 40 percent, and the density of the fibers was 1.96 grams/cc. An analysis was made to determine the effect of bent specimens upon the measured elastic modulus. Tensile tests were made on dog-boned shaped specimens that conform to ASTM Standard D3552-77 and also straight-sided specimens. Results were virtually the same. Thus, straight- sided specimens could be used due to their simplicity in manufacture. Tapered soft aluminum tabs with the same width as the specimen should be use to minimize stress increase at the tabs.
